Sugar, ui design for the olpc

Now this is an interesting read, how are you going to design a user interface for the One Laptop Per Child. This has got to be a challenge and I am definitly going to read this.

Imagine the problems, you encounter as you have to design a interface for such a broad audience. And for such a challenging platform, no fast video cards and lots of ram.

The constraints have a lot of parallels with my particular line of work. Designing user interfaces for web applications running in a citrix enviroment, also can be challenging. We want to use the latest ajax tools, but are hampered by constraints. Our audience is bound to a miserable browsing platform (ie) and lousy preformance.

Still within constraints the best things are being created, so I will learn from "sugar" as the UI is being called.

This is going to be a short one. In explaining to people about the faulty boxmodel of Internet Explorer 6 (in quirks mode) and below, I made two files that demonstrate it.

Here they are, for your use in explaining or trying to understand what the faulty box model is.

strict mode

quirky mode

In reviewing them and understanding the box model, you should be helped by these sources: google : a number of results for box model quirks.alistapart (zeldman's article) talk about what doctype does what.

In short, if you come across it, don't dispair, it is easily solvable. And as Andy Budd so clearly states at atmedia 06, if you know and understand a browser bug, it won't bother you any more.

So, keep it up and fix those boxes...
